Q?: Why did Fort Stanwix become a National Monument? A: A National Monument is intented to preserve at least one nationally significant resource. Fort Stanwix became a National Monument in 1935 because of its significance through the French and Indian War, through the American Revolution, and as a gathering place for treaty signings with American Indians.
Q?: When was the fort built? A: In 1758 by British forces and rebuilt in 1776 by American forces.
Q?: Why was the fort built where it is? A: To protect the Oneida Carrying Place, a trail 3 miles long between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek. This is part of the larger New York water way system, the only natural break in the Appalachian mountain chain. Q?: During which wars did Fort Stanwix serve? A: The French and Indian (or Seven Years War) and American Revolutionary War. Q?: Why is Fort Stanwix sometimes called Fort Schuyler? A: Fort Stanwix was the fort's name under the British; name for Gen. John Stanwix. When the Americans rebuilt it they named it after their general, Phillip Schuyler. Q?: How much does it cost to enter the park? A: The cost is free for both the visitor center and fort exhibits. Q?: Can I buy National Parks Passes here? A: Yes, all National Parks Passes are offered at this site if you are planning a trip and would like to purchase one. However, you do not need a pass to enter the park. Q?: What hours is the park open? A: The park visitor center, or the Willett Center, is open everyday 9 a.m.-5 p.m., except for January 1, December 25, and Thanksgiving Day. The fort grounds are normally closed between late December and early April. Hours for the grounds in others seasons vary. A: The park provides no concessionaires or picnic tables, but people are welcome to bring their meals and dine on the park lawn. There are also numerous eateries in Rome on all the main routes into the city. They vary from fast food, to bistros, to sit down restaurants, local and chain. Many are a few blocks walking distance from the park on different side streets. Q?: Where can I stay overnight? A: There are several hotels, motels, and other inns that are available to stay at within a 20 mile radius. However there are several facilities within an hours distance or less, both private and state run. A: There are no overnight facilities for the visiting public at the park. Overnights do occur, however, on specific occasion.
